Interview with Adam Lasnik of Google revealing some nice SEO tips

A couple of weeks ago at SES London, a very nice interview came out with Google Search Evangelist Adam Lasnik on several important SEO and webmaster relevant topics. Adam answers some questions about Flash, JavaScript, duplicate content (especially with press releases) and he also suggested uses of internal site nofollow tags and website architecture to sculpture PageRank.
Interesting things I picked up:
- Google does not penalize for duplicate content anymore, both within a domain and across multiple domains.
- Always link back to content if it is duplicate so Google can identify the source. You will not be penalized.
- If you have a lot of duplicate content within your site, there maybe some negative effects such as page rank diffusion, and Adam recommends using 301 redirects to identify the main content page that people will link to. Again, you will not be penalized for have the same content repeated within your domain.
- The best way to do PageRank sculpting is adjusting your website architecture and linking your priority pages where you want page rank from your index page and never go more then 3 levels deep. He mentioned also that by using nofollow tags on some home page links (like to the disclaimer or maybe contact us page) you can send more page rank to some of your more preferred pages where you would like the page rank to accumulate.
But what I found particularly interesting is the constant mention of PageRank! After the page rank fiasco of 2006 and early 2007, it is generally assumed that page rank means very little these days. However, Adam kept mentioning it over and over again and even using the term as a measure of the worth of the page. Interesting.
This video of Adam Lasnik lasts about 10 minutes and is a definit watch for any online marketer or webmaster.
