Link Baiting is in essence an advanced form of link building. Link Baiting is pretty much like baiting a hook: A fisherman would bait up a hook so that a fish would be more inclined to take a bite. It is the same with link baiting. You throw out a link somewhere, like on one of the social media sites below and you dress it up with an irresistible story. It can be about anything. It just needs to have appeal to whoever is reading or viewing the content. This is active link baiting, so going out to social media sites for example and telling the community “Hey, look at this! Have you heard of this really weird thing before?” - And you hope that the community will “bite” your link and come to your site = traffic!

Link baiting can be done is a much more passive way also. This is what Google would prefer of course and is how Matt Cutts refers to best link baiting pracktices. In this scenario, you would publish a supper story or very cool product on your site that would get everyone talking about it and linking back to it. I can see why Matt Cutts would rather such a practice as it is the most ideal online behavior, but in reality, we do not all have a wander product that everyone is talking about and most of us need to entice online communities to take notice of what ‘we’ do by inviting them via good ethical link baiting techniques. Link Baiting is a very challenging and exciting task to do really well. And if done correctly, it can yield unbelievable results.

It is a great place to start your link baiting. But be carefull and do not over do it! And always make sure you bait links with high quality interesting content that the users on the social media sites will find interesting. Why? Because for your link and story to work its way up the ranks and be dispayed on high PR pages where all the traffic is, it needs to be voted on by the members of the respective social media networks! And for this, you need to give them a reason to vote.
