Matt Cutts Interview at SMX - A personal touch
The Search Marketing Expo (SMX) West conference took place this week. I was reading up on some of the highlights and came across this very nice interview with Matt Cutts (google’s public figure and main google engineer) which is definitely worth the watch. Although the first half of the interview was quite personal (which is nice!), Matt talks about some nice points with his involvement in the Google Spam Team.
These two discuss everything from how Matt Cutts started at Google, to how he feels about being Google’s public face. He also share’s his thoughts on what it takes to join his team. Toward the end of the video he makes some very nice comments regarding ‘WebSpam’ which is a term that really relates to ‘Black Hat SEO’ techniques.
Some interesting points discussed:
- Human vs algorithmic intervention in search. Matt discusses the advantages of using humans to manually modify search results for the better.
- Sneaky Java script redirects to present search engines one page and the user another page.
- Hidden content and how this dumb SEO technique is still being made today by some people.
- Keyword stuffing and how it can actually negatively affect your rankings. Sometimes unintentionally.
It’s a long 25 min video but well worth the watch and also gives you a good idea of what sort of person Matt is.
