I just came across this very attractive and potentially influential search engine Searchme.com
I think it is worth the mention and watching the 2 promotional videos below which will give you a very good feel at how exactly this search engine works and how it is different from the others.

About Searchme:
Searchme is an initiative of the investment giant Sequoia Capital, who were one of the main investors in Google and Yahoo! This Mountain View, California based company has raised about $31 million dollars for this project.
Searchme, resembles Apple’s popular three-dimensional graphical user interface used on its iTunes service, with a little of Ask.com’s categories thrown in.
Searchme is currently in beta and users can apply for an invitation from their website to test the search engine.
Searchme has been working closely with giant Adobe, in order to create the graphical page transition effects. If you look at the videos above, you will see the search results display a top graphical section and displays the text listings in the bottom section.
As to the business model, it will be advertising of course, but probably very media rich advertising will be used to complement the site.
Just thought I would bring this search engine to your attention, sounds like there is a market still for startup search engines to steal the show if they can return a better user experience with better search relevancy.
Also, Google is actually developing a similar project but has not released anything to the public to date. Imagine a project that could feed of the Google search and display the (google) results on a platform similar to searchme!?
